The Subtle Knife
The Subtle Knife (2013) is a major architectural-scale artwork by Sara Barker, commissioned collaboratively by Ryder Architecture and BALTIC. Installed as a permanent public artwork, the piece reflects Barker's distinctive sculptural language, which merges drawing, sculpture, and spatial composition into delicate yet expansive metal and glass constructions, fabricated in brass, aluminium, glass, and steel.
Barker's sculptural practice is rooted in fragmentation, narrative reference, and the translation of gestures from drawing into three-dimensional space. The Subtle Knife extends these ideas into an architectural context — its composition of slender metal elements and translucent planes creates a sense of suspended motion, as if the work is simultaneously cutting through and stitching together the surrounding space. The layered steel and aluminium components act like drawn marks in air, while the glass elements introduce shifting reflections and refractions throughout the day.
