GSA Reid Building Door Handles
As part of the Reid Building at the Glasgow School of Art, bespoke door handles were developed to support the building's architectural language through carefully considered detail and material presence. The project formed a small but significant component of a building of international architectural importance.
Developed in collaboration with Steven Holl Architects, the design required a high level of precision and material sensitivity. Bronze and aluminium were selected for their durability, tactile qualities and capacity to age gracefully through use. Careful attention was given to proportion, weight, surface finish and the relationship between hand and object, ensuring the handles felt intuitive while remaining visually restrained.
The completed elements sit quietly within the architectural whole, contributing to the daily experience of the building without drawing undue attention to themselves. The project reflects a design-led approach to detail-scale fabrication, where material understanding, craftsmanship and use are considered inseparable from architectural intent.
