Skye Iconic Sites Project
Commissioned by LATERAL North in partnership with Outdoor Access for Scotland, the Skye Iconic Sites Project involved the creation of bespoke signage to support wayfinding and interpretation across some of Skye's most visited landscapes. Delivered in 2023, the project forms part of a wider initiative to enhance visitor experiences while safeguarding the island's natural and cultural heritage.
Sculpture & Design provided full design and fabrication services, producing durable, site-responsive signage crafted from corten steel. This material was selected for its weathering properties, its ability to develop a protective rust-like patina, and its warm, earthy tones that blend sympathetically with Skye's dramatic, rugged terrain. Each piece was carefully developed to balance clarity, accessibility, and environmental sensitivity, ensuring that information is communicated effectively without distracting from the landscape.
The project focused on creating a cohesive and long-lasting signage system suited to Scotland's challenging coastal climate. The corten steel elements contribute to a strong visual identity across multiple locations, supporting improved public access and responsible exploration while enriching Skye's visitor infrastructure.
