Head
Head is a large-scale public artwork by Swiss artist Nicolas Party, commissioned by The Modern Institute and presented as part of Glasgow International 2018. Installed in the Aird's Lane Green Space, the sculpture formed a striking temporary landmark within Glasgow's city centre, engaging directly with its urban and architectural surroundings.
Resembling an oversized, stylised head with the simplified features characteristic of Party's painted portraits, the work draws on sources ranging from classical monuments to theatrical props and carnival imagery. The sculpture reflects Party's broader practice, which reexamines traditional genres of portraiture, still life and landscape through a distinctive contemporary graphic language.
Sculpture & Design were responsible for the technical development, fabrication and installation of the artwork. Produced in painted fibreglass, the sculpture required careful material selection, mould-making and finishing to translate Party's flat, painterly aesthetic into a durable three-dimensional form suited to outdoor display within a public space.
