A Glasgow Spectacular
A Glasgow Spectacular was a major temporary public artwork by artist duo Joanne Tatham & Tom O'Sullivan, commissioned for Festival 2018, the cultural programme accompanying the Glasgow 2018 European Championships. Installed in George Square, the work formed a large-scale gateway structure through which visitors entered the heart of the Festival, marking the Square as a focal point for public events and celebrations.
The installation combined bold geometric forms, graphic patterning and playful motifs that referenced both the visual language of the artists' wider practice and the civic and cultural identity of Glasgow. By day, the structure operated as a striking sculptural presence within the historic urban setting of George Square; by night, integrated lighting transformed the work into a luminous beacon, reinforcing its role as a threshold and meeting point for Festival activity.
Sculpture & Design fabricated the artwork in steel and plywood, translating the artists' complex visual language into a robust, precisely engineered structure suitable for intensive public use and the logistical demands of a busy city centre site.
