Beithir
Commissioned by Scottish Canals, Bella the Beithir is a striking sculptural landmark created for the newly redeveloped Stockingfield Bridge in Maryhill, Glasgow. Designed by artist Nichol Wheatley, the sculpture brings to life the mythical beithir, a serpent-like creature from Highland folklore, transforming the bridge approaches into a place of storytelling, imagination, and local identity.
Fabricated by Sculpture & Design, the piece is constructed from galvanized steel and ferrocement, materials chosen for their strength, longevity, and ability to withstand the demands of an exposed outdoor setting. The robust structural form, combined with carefully modelled surfaces, gives Bella a dynamic presence that both anchors the space and invites public engagement.
Completed in 2024, the sculpture forms part of the wider regeneration of the Stockingfield Bridge area, contributing to a vibrant public realm and enhancing the cultural and visual character of this important community link.
