A Forest
A Forest (2010) is a permanent outdoor installation by Scottish artist Jim Lambie, commissioned for the woodland landscape of Jupiter Artland. The work consists of tessellated panels of spray-painted chrome, each corner peeled back to reveal layers of vivid background colour. These mirrored chrome surfaces reflect the surrounding woodland, shifting constantly with the seasons and weather, making the piece an ever-changing extension of the landscape itself.
Lambie's dynamic use of mirrored steel and aluminium panels allows the work to oscillate between bold Pop-inflected colour and camouflage-like integration with its environment. The folded corners evoke peeling posters or layered urban billboards, while simultaneously functioning as sculptural gestures that open the surface and reveal what lies beneath.
Installed on the woodland side of Jupiter Artland's steadings buildings, A Forest introduces an unexpected, nightclub-like chromatic energy into a rural setting, yet remains perfectly at home as it mirrors the forest back onto itself. Each passing season produces a new visual composition, making the work both site-specific and time-responsive.
