THE GREAT TAPESTRY OF SCOTLAND GALLERY
Galashiels
2021
ART
The artwork was conceived by artist Andrew Crummy for the arrival staircase in the new Great Tapestry of Scotland Gallery in Galashiels. The artwork is a tribute to all 1031 stitchers who worked on the Tapestry itself, and includes all of their names etched on 22 coloured threads. The threads wind up the wall of the Gallery and join at a tall female figure made from hand hammered brass.
Sculpture & Design worked with Andrew, the Gallery and Page & Park architects to fabricate and install the artwork. The design was fully digitised from a full scale hand drawing prepared by Andrew. All of the names were added to this, and component parts were laser cut from various thicknesses of aluminium and then painted. The artwork was installed using a full scale template to ensure all parts were positioned accurately.
