Poised Array
Poised Array (2007) is a major public artwork commissioned for the BBC Scotland headquarters at Pacific Quay, Glasgow. Created by artist Toby Paterson, the installation was developed over three years and features an expansive composition of geometric, multi-coloured forms inspired by fragments of Ordnance Survey maps of Scotland.
The large-scale structure, approximately 10 metres high and 20 metres long, combines steel, plywood, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and durable two-pack paint, resulting in a vivid, architectural intervention that reflects both Scotland's varied geography and the industrial heritage of the Pacific Quay site. Paterson's 25 map-derived shapes evoke regions across the country, though he intentionally leaves their exact locations open to interpretation.
Installed prominently at the BBC entrance, Poised Array functions as both landmark and landscape — an abstract topography transformed into sculptural form. The work has become an iconic feature of the riverside campus, celebrated for its interplay of colour, form, and regional identity.
