For Myself And Strangers
For Myself and Strangers (2014) was a major solo exhibition by Sara Barker, commissioned as part of GENERATION: 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland and presented at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Glasgow. The exhibition featured a new body of work in which Barker expanded her distinctive sculptural language, merging drawing, painting and sculpture into spatial, three-dimensional forms.
The works employed a delicate and complex combination of glass, brass, aluminium, and painted surfaces. Barker's slender rods, folded metal planes, and translucent glass panels created structures that seemed to hover between solidity and fragility — like drawings suspended in space, balancing line, colour, and material in compositions that explore what she terms "biographical space," informed by modernist literature and poetic fragments.
Throughout the exhibition, Barker's installations created an atmosphere of weightless, improbable forms, inviting the viewer to navigate around and through them. For Myself and Strangers demonstrated Barker's ability to shape gallery space through minimal yet highly expressive sculptural gestures.
