Culzean Castle Decorative Orbs
The Culzean Castle Decorative Orbs were created in 2017 as part of ongoing conservation and enhancement works undertaken by Purcell for the National Trust for Scotland. Fabricated in corten steel, the orbs were designed to sit sympathetically within the dramatic, historic setting of Culzean Castle — Robert Adam's landmark clifftop masterpiece overlooking the Firth of Clyde.
Their weathering-steel construction allows the surfaces to develop a warm, rusted patina that harmonises with the castle's stone and the coastal landscape. The corten material ensures long-term durability in this exposed site while providing a contemporary sculptural accent within the estate's historic architecture, extensive gardens and woodland paths — an environment renowned for its follies, ornamental features and designed landscapes.
The orbs contribute to Culzean's long tradition of blending heritage, craftsmanship and artistic intervention across its 260-hectare estate, managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
