Change The Setting
Change the Setting was developed in collaboration with artist Sara Barker for presentation at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh. The project formed part of Barker's ongoing exploration of material relationships, spatial composition and the tension between structure, transparency and drawing in three dimensions.
The work brought together a diverse palette of materials, including brass, steel, aluminium, etched glass and acrylic, requiring careful consideration of weight, surface, junctions and visual balance. Fabrication focused on achieving precision and clarity across contrasting materials, ensuring that each element retained its distinct character while contributing to a coherent spatial language.
Attention was given to how elements occupied and activated the gallery space, with construction and detailing supporting the work's sense of openness, layering and permeability. The outcome reflects a design-led approach to artist collaboration, where technical resolution, material sensitivity and spatial intent are closely aligned.
