Bubblefield
Bubblefield (2012) is a large-scale light installation by artist Del Whitticase, created for the grounds of Invergordon Community Hospital in the Scottish Highlands. The work draws inspiration from the dramatic industrial lighting of the oil rigs and support vessels that dominate the surrounding firth landscape — an everyday but visually striking presence in the region.
Developed through an extensive programme of community workshops, the artwork is rooted in long-exposure digital photography experiments carried out with local residents, including young people and participants from the Isobel Rhind Centre. These collaborative sessions produced dynamic light-based imagery that informed the final sculptural and lighting design.
The completed installation comprises tall, slender elements fitted with colourful circular "bubble" forms, creating an illuminated field that transforms the hospital grounds after dark. The work reflects Whitticase's wider interest in public-realm installations that remix industrial, environmental, and community-generated visual languages into poetic light artworks.
