Simon Starling asked Sculpture & Design to produce a series of "Blast Trees", the charred remnants of trees exposed to blasts in WWI, as part of his At Twilight show at the Common Guild, Glasgow. We started by producing charcoal from selected branches and boughs in a traditional kiln near Loch Lomond. These were then pinned together using bespoke steel articulated joints before an armature to take the Japanese carved masks were attached.
